76th Avignon Festival

The 2022 Festival… it’s on!

from 7th to 30th July 2022

In Avignon, what is called “The Festival” is actually two events: The Festival d’Avignon (known as the “In“) and the Festival Off. This year both festivals start on the same day: July 7th. However, the In will close on the 26th of July, while the Off will end on the 30th of July.

The Festival d’Avignon is not only an exceptional place of performances, it is also a place of exchange on society, on cultural policy, on the future of the Theatre…

The garden of the Calvet Museum, the Benoit XII Cloister, the garden of the Ceccano Library, the Saint Louis Cloister, the Celestins Church welcome the public for lectures, conferences and debates around the shows performed during the Festival “In“.

One gets used to the hubbub of the queues in front of the theatres, because the crowd is dense, to the posters that cover the streets occupying every square inch of available space in the intramural area, to the sound of the trumpets composed by Maurice Jarre that resound before each performance in the Honour Courtyard of the Popes’ Palace, to the strolling of the actors of the Off who parade to incite the passers-by to come and see their show.

This will be the 76th edition of the world’s largest live performing arts festival… An extraordinary moment.

As every year, there will be something for all tastes and ages: theatre, dance, lectures, music, circus, exhibitions…. art is everywhere, in the street, in gardens, chapels and cloisters and of course in the countless theatres. Enough to satisfy tens of thousands of passionate spectators.

The Festival has its own codes that you have to know. For some fans who arrive early in Avignon, it’s already underway. On July 6th, several theatres offer an invitation-only preview of their show: La Générale.

Grande parade du festival Off 2022

The kick-off is the Grand Opening Parade of the Off, which leaves the Place des Carmes on July 6th at 5:30 pm to arrive at the new Off Village (6 rue Pourquery de Boisserin near the rue de la Republique).

Subscription cards (€20) entitle the holder to reduced rates for all In shows. The Festival In shop is on the Place de l’Horloge opposite the Town Hall, the Off shop is at the Point Off opposite the ramparts at the exit of the Portail Magnanien (subscription cards €16).
